Well, I'm not going to go into too many details just yet. I am still
under NDA until 6 PM but the new background image is awesome. (I
wonder if that's 6 PM Pacific time?)
All kidding aside, it is a shiny new operating system. (and the box
too!) It will have many features which we can use and many of them
are real useful, more then I thing we might have since in the prior
dot versions of OS X.
You may even consider buying one tonight. Which is fine but let me
suggest a few ground prudent ground rules:
BACK UP YOUR MACHINE -- Think SuperDuper!
There is no reason to NOT buy one tonight. If you like the fun and
shirts you can get (or a little Leopard at Di-No, I think) be part of
it and help the Apple
the you hopefully respect. Otherwise, wait a few days, the noise will
die down and the lines will be shorter.
It is here to stay and everyone, no matter when they get it will get
any updates there will be. (and there will be.)
New machines will have it as of today as a drop in, I believe.
There are two versions of client. The difference is that one is
licensed for 1 computer either for home or business, the other is
licensed for
up to 5 computers for HOME USE ONLY. (I don't write the license, I'm
just expected to follow them as closely as possible.)
The new system requirements are G4 or G5 867 MHz or greater (or any
Intel Mac) Minimum 512 MB of Ram (I say 1.25 GB or more)
DVD drive to allow install (which you can boot from to make it
easiest) and an additional HD to use Time Machine.
This is not just a case of "you first" as some people have been hear
to say.
For you that have a computer that is "mission critical" for you or
your business, "hold your horses" before rushing in to do an install.
It is not possible to go forward with an operating system and not
have some trouble with software written to a prior specification.
Until you know that your software, especially that which is mission
critical, for example Adobe Creative Suite or FileMaker
AND ALL THEIR associated plug-ins have been tested and are ready for
the new operating system, do not install Mac OS X 10.5.
You can wait the two weeks, I am sure. I mention those specific
applications because they have not been tested and in the case of
FileMaker, users have been RECOMMENDED to wait until an update is
shipped the second week of November.
If on the other hand, you are the hobbyist type then you understand
these issues, GO FOR IT! I will be in 4 HRS and 30 minutes
You can be there second or third or so in your user group to install
and experience the release version of OS X 10.5 yourself.
(No uncoded messages on an open channel) You can also be available to
answer questions of your neighbors and few members
in the coming days.
DID I MENTION -- BACK UP YOUR MACHINE -- Think SuperDuper!
Next up, expect an overview of the features and anything I have
gleaned from a couple of hours of use.
If you have any specific issues about OS X 10.5, please email them to
the list or you can email them to me directly. I would be happy
to answer them for you and I hope to see emails from the rest of you
soon.
Let's see how zzl spins this one.
